SATURDAY, MAY 29TH, FIRST DAY IN KAUAI

KAUAI 2010

We started planning our trip to Kauai more than 6 months before we went. Trying to solidify a vacation schedule for 16 people can be daunting. But, by February, we all decided it was definitely a go and began scrambling for the cheapest airfare. NONE of the airlines really had cheap airfare to Kauai. Emily found seats from Boise through Seattle for her family, arriving in the evening, minus Crew who stayed with Grandpa and Grandma DeVries for the week. Grandma Char ended up flying alone going through Denver. John and Brittney flew from Portland to Honolulu and then Kauai, arriving in the afternoon. Todd, (was visiting his parents in North Ogden) Brady, Laurel, Paisley, Jocelyn, John and I flew to Los Angeles and stayed with Megan and Todd to catch an early flight Saturday morning.

Paisley was good on the flight
Flying to Los Angeles. John, Brady and Todd all had their heads
down reading the entire flight....They weren't the most fun traveling companions.

Poor Megan had to get up at 4:00 a. m. to drive to the hospital and do her rounds so she could scurry back to the apartment and grab her bags. Todd dropped some of us off at LAX and then drove back to the apartment to catch a cab with Megan and John. We ended up at the back of the plane and that turned out well with Paisley. We arrived in Kauai at noon.

Jocelyn figured out a nifty way to carry her luggage and Paisley
all together while we were getting our rental vans

Paisley was not an authorized driver

We had a few hiccups after we arrived. We drove from the airport to Costco to do shopping. We called to see if we could have an early check in at the condos. We were told that Mindy and Larry needed to be there to check in in person. Oh No! Mindy and Larry had let us purchase their time share portion so that we could have 3 condos. I had the written contract from Mindy but Larry had to do some calling from Utah and then it was all smoothed over. We spent oodles of money at Costco for food and things for the week. In all, we actually only ate out 3 times and we were able to eat well without spending a fortune by cooking for our group.

After checking in, unloading groceries, luggage, and distributing food, snacks, and drinks to all 3 condos, we headed for the pool. The weather was perfect and such a nice change from the rainy weather we had been having for so long in North Ogden.

We received Lei's when we registered at the condos. I like Todd's dark hair on him better.

Todd welcomed Johnny the Hawaiian way....glad these guys all get along so well

Johnny and Brittney had found out what their sweet little baby's sex was 3 days earlier and they wanted to tell all of us in person. Unfortunately, Emily and her family's flight didn't arrive until after 7:00 pm and they had some trouble getting the car they had rented. With the hour and a half drive from the airport to the north side of Kauai where we were staying.....it was almost 11:00 before they arrived. We had all eaten Costco pizza and we fed the DeVries' and then all gathered for the announcement.

Johnny and Brittney had devised a very clever way to tell us their news. Johnny placed his laptop on the counter and we all watched a PowerPoint presentation with the final picture showing us BOY PARTS! We all screamed, hugged, and gave congratulations. What a wonderful way to end our first day of vacation.

I have loved reading all the family postings about this family vacation. I'm excited to read about each day of your trip. Johnny should post that power point on their blog. Would love to see it!
