Before we left for our trip to New Zealand, I checked weather.com for an approximate temperature for the cities we would visit on the dates we would be there. Of course, packing for a two week trip, to a place so far away, and a country on the other side of the world where it should be the middle of the spring season, is tricky. I decided to take long and short sleeve jackets, sweaters, and shirts to wear with jeans. I also chose to take my 4 year old, green flowered rain coat, thinking that I wouldn't have to wear it very much since weather.com said the temperatures would mostly be in the high 50's and low 60's with sunshine.
Needless to say, weather.com was not always accurate in its weather forecast. Most of our 14 days in New Zealand were pretty chilly with some rain. I was grateful for my green flowered coat. But, knowing what I know now, I would have taken another coat choice to break up the days. We observed daily in our jaunts that most people in New Zealand wear dark colors for outerwear. I rarely saw a bright color for a coat in all of our touristing. Every time we took a picture I would see if I could take off my coat so that all the pictures wouldn't seem the same. I know there are over 30 or more pictures of me in the green flowered coat.
I always stuck out wherever we went and I had quite a few people tell me how much they liked my coat. The funniest thing happened as we boarded the plane to Auckland the day we were flying home. John, Johnny and Britt sat across the aisle from me and I sat by a young woman. After we were in the air a while. she and I began to talk. Her first comment to me was, "I know who you are. I manage the LoneStar restaurant in Christchurch and my friend came to show me your green coat the night you ate there. I love your coat." I couldn't help but laugh that my infamous green coat was so recognizable.
Brittney even suggested we could have a book titled, "Where in New Zealand is Veronica and her Green Flowered Coat."
So as you pack for your next vacation remember my tale and my advice --- TAKE MORE THAN ONE COAT!
